“The Cross Keys is perfectly situated in the town centre for a visit to Saffron Walden. We had our evening meal and breakfast along with our overnight stay in room 7, the food was very good and probably the best part. You have to park about 500m away and pay in a public car park (despite booking.com saying parking available). The room is annexed outside and up a steel unlit spiral staircase which will definitely be an issue for some. The room was nice enough but the floorboards are extremely creaky and the extractor noisy during the night. There was a fault with the main room light causing it to flicker so we didn’t use it and the shower absolutely soaks the plastered (not tiled) wall.”

“Last minute B&B booking at this characterful little hotel in the quiet village of Great Chesterford. The hotel was a few minutes drive from junction 10 of the M11, so I had an easy 20-minute drive to Stansted early on Friday morning. Unfortunately, the night I stayed followed the hottest day of the year and there was no air conditioning. The room i stayed in was actually apart from the main building with access via an internal spiral staircase! The room was spacious and clean with a large en-suite bathroom. I didn't have time to explore the rest of the hotel bar/lounge or village as i had to get to the airport so early the next day but it was a charming little place, albeit perhaps in need of some decor updates and the addition of some air conditioning.”

“The Red Lion has so much potential - the rooms are clean ( except cobwebs in the skylight window) and it was very comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant lets this place down. Breakfast day 1 no yogurt, no apple juice , no crunchy nut cornflakes Day 2 no yogurt, no cncf although they did have some apple juice. Day 3 still no yogurt, no cncf, no sausages, no beans and no marmalade (although some was later found) . I got the feeling that this was accepted as normal that they would run out of things. We ate at the restaurant one evening - hummus was like no other hummus I have ever eaten - we sent it back - I had the lamb for main meal and it was delicious - others complained that the orange mash - no idea what it was as it was not listed on the menu - was tasteless - but the pie was v nice. The pavlova dessert was awful - crème freche had turned to liquid and the meringue was tasteless. I am sorry to say the lack of attention to detail became irritating and we will not be returning. It was not as if the rooms are cheap and we expected more for the money. ”
