“The good: Location, room (we got upgraded to a penthouse. All rooms are ocean view, it seems), the beach would have been great if not for the massive piles of stinky sargassum and the sea turtles private tour. The bad: the food was hit or miss, mostly bland or barely edible, lukewarm and the drinks weak. The buffet was better than the ala carte restaurants, but just barely. Even the Mexican food was bad! A couple of times we saw dried leftover food stuck on the supposedly clean plates and glasses. I’m not sure about the other glowing reviews that I was reading before I booked but we’re definitely not going back. ”

“I’m a little late sharing my review of our stay at Secrets Akumal in May. We were really excited for our trip as my parents visited a few years ago and constantly speak so highly of their visit. My husband and I found it wasn’t quite the right fit for us. I will caveat that this was our first time at an all-inclusive. While the resort is beautiful, there is a lot to do in the area, and the staff work really hard, it felt extremely curated and impersonal, and there were a few weird elements that didn’t seem to fit the very high price tag including an uncomfortable experience being locked out of our room. The worst part of our stay happened when we extended by one night as we weren’t feeling great and opted to skip the next location on our trip. We stopped by the front desk to confirm they had our updated reservation, to ensure our room keys were extended, and to check if they needed any credit card information for payment. They assured us they had everything they needed, our keys were updated, and to enjoy the rest of our extended stay. The next morning we had breakfast and headed to our room to grab our day bags to visit some cenotes. When we reached our room our keys didn’t work. It was unsettling as our passports, laptops, etc. were locked in the room. No one was at the concierge or responding to online messages. I had to walk to the front desk, wait for 15 minutes, and then be told that they had locked us out as we hadn't paid. The whole ordeal was really frustrating as we had asked if they needed our card the night before and ended up wasting two hours that morning and walking back and forth to the room twice. It was so strange to be treated like we were ‘stealing’ after we had already spent a lot of money at the resort. Overall the food was pretty good, especially the breakfasts. As vegetarians, we found some restaurants had better dinner menus than others. We especially enjoyed the Italian restaurant. Room service was a bit less tasty than the restaurants bu”
