“We had an amazing stay at Shiv Kothi Homestay, and a huge part of that was because of Vivek. As first-time visitors to Varanasi, we were a little overwhelmed and aware that it’s easy for pilgrims to get misled or overcharged. Vivek made our entire trip stress-free with his honesty, kindness, and genuine willingness to help. He woke up early in the morning to guide us on the best route for our Mangala Aarti and Kashi Vishwanath darshan, arranged a trustworthy boat ride on the Ganga, recommended the best places to visit, and was always available whenever we had questions. His local knowledge and honest advice helped us avoid unnecessary hassle and enjoy our pilgrimage with peace of mind. The homestay itself is in an excellent location, within walking distance of Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Manikarnika Ghat, Dashashwamedh Ghat, and the major attractions of the old city. It was clean, comfortable, and perfect for a spiritual visit to Kashi. If you’re visiting Varanasi for the first time, I highly recommend staying here. Vivek is a wonderful host who truly cares about his guests and goes above and beyond to make their stay memorable. We would happily stay here again and will definitely recommend Shiv Kothi Homestay to our friends and family visiting Varanasi.”

“I first went to check the property before deciding whether to stay. I had already seen a review warning people to stay away and mentioning that the sheets were disgustingly stained. Unfortunately, I decided not to trust that review, and staying here for even one night was one of the worst decisions I made during my trip. When I arrived, there were several men working there, but it was honestly difficult to understand who was actually responsible for the property. At first, they seemed friendly and welcoming. Now, after my experience, I understand why previous guests had such negative experiences. The cleanliness was absolutely unacceptable. There were no clean sheets available. The duvet was disgusting and clearly had not been properly cleaned. I had to insist myself that they find clean sheets so I could even sleep in the room. One employee would tell another employee what to do, while the other would simply look at him, because apparently there were no clean sheets or duvets available anywhere in the property. It took around two hours just to try to find something clean enough for me to use. They were checking different rooms because they did not have proper clean bedding available. This is completely unacceptable for a hotel. I was already extremely upset, but there was another issue. Before checking in, I clearly explained to one of the men that my train was leaving the following day at 5:00 PM and that I would need to leave the hotel around 6:30 PM? [sic] — I asked if, as a courtesy, it would be possible for me to stay until around 3:00 or 4:00 PM so that I could shower and refresh myself before beginning a 17-hour train journey. He agreed without hesitation and told me there would be absolutely no problem. The next day, however, their attitude changed completely. Despite the conversation being very clear, one of the younger men started shouting at me, saying that accepting my booking the previous day had been a mistake. He told me that he did not care about my review and that, regardless of what I had been told the previous day, I had to take my belongings and leave. I was shocked by the aggressive and disrespectful way I was treated. I also repeatedly requested toilet paper, and it took hours for them to provide it. I understand that India has cultural differences and that not every property operates exactly as a hotel in other countries would. But if you advertise accommodation to international travelers, basic cleanliness, hygiene and respectful treatment should not be considered unreasonable expectations. What disturbed me most was the way the staff treated me as a foreign woman traveling alone. Their attitude changed dramatically once they realized I was not simply going to accept unacceptable conditions. Being alone does not give anyone the right to shout at me or speak to me aggressively. This property may have potential, but the lack of cleanliness, organization, basic hygiene and professionalism completely ruined my stay. I strongly recommend that foreign travelers, and especially women traveling alone, stay away from this property. Do not make the same mistake I made by ignoring the previous warning. I should have trusted that review. Terrible cleanliness. Terrible organization. Terrible customer service. Extremely disrespectful treatment. I absolutely do NOT recommend this place.”
