Methos Homestay - Raja Ampat

This place is beautiful and the bungalows are well-appointed and clean. The problems come with the lack of management. Our main complaint was that there was literally one staff member who could speak English and who was holding the place together. Methos was never there, and Jonas was under a lot of stress trying to manage all of the guests. Luckily, we enjoyed several of the other travelers, and so went on excursions with them. If we had all had dissimilar interests, or didn't like them, there is no way it could have worked out. The other guys who drove the boats were not guides and seemed to not care much about the guests. Also, Julianna was the only one in the kitchen, and she was also under a lot of pressure to cook for everyone by herself. The food was frequently fairly minimal...not sure if this was due to the holiday or her simply being overstretched. It is a very long and expensive journey to get to Raja Ampat. We had an amazing time, but there were moments that were unsettling (like being dropped on a reef in the middle of the ocean while the boat took off to wait very far away---without any communication), and a little annoying (not being met for excursions when we were told). We had excellent communication with Martijn prior to our trip, and that was very helpful. We still loved the whole trip, but much can be improved.

We had a great stay with methos! It was our first time in Raja Ampat but many fellow guests mentioned to us how nice the bungalows are here compared to other homestays. The house reef is gorgeous and it was amazing to just snorkel right from the veranda each day. Methos was very accommodating to our desires and his team was always punctual and patient with us. There is no en-suite bathroom but the shared bathroom was frequently attended to. There is no western shower but the clean water barrels were always full. Likewise no WiFi but strong telkomsel signal most of the time and reliable electricity during the evenings. We enjoyed many of the activities offered especially when joining other travelers. All meals are served on your private veranda so you have to make and effort to socialize if you’d like to. We particularly enjoyed our encounter with a cuscus that lives on the property. Also great access by foot to the local villages. We brought snacks with us as I’m a vegetarian and was uncertain what meals would look like and if you do the same I’d recommend bringing some sort of heavy plastic container as ants and other wild things can get in. Overall we loved our stay and hope to return!

Had an amazing week at Methos Homestay. The bungalow and the deck looking out to the sea are heaven on earth. It is also well located nearby manta point and Sawinggrai village allowing you to do activities around and get a taste of local culture. Martinj was very helpful during our stay and the whole family is lovely! For the best snorkeling, jump off your bungalow and head west away from the village, lots of sea life awaits :).
