Amphitheatre Backpackers Lodge

Great friendly staff and accommodation in beautiful surroundings.

I stayed here as a base camp for some hiking at Drakensberg. Didn’t know much about the area and in retrospect wouldn’t stay here What this place is: Convenient to hiking and other outdoor activities, not too far from the major highway, fairly inexpensive, in a scenic place. It is also fairly ran down and in somewhat of a death spiral - not enough visitors to justify upgrades or upkeep, but seems like people don’t want to come because it is deteriorating rapidly What this place is not: it is not a place filled with other solo / small group hikers and backpackers. There were days when they only had 1-2 people in the entire lodge. There are no tours readily available, if you don’t have a car - the transportation offered by them is not reliable. I got caught in a middle of an internal dispute and my shuttle as a result was a no show one day. They have the amenities listed on the site but they are all in poor conditions It has a potential but I am afraid without new management and new renovations this place won’t last long. Avoid

I've been to amphitheatre Backpackers many times over the last 9 years. It used to be one of my favorite places. The views the vibe and the facilities were incredible
