I don't know if it was just because of the Agoda booking deal, but we were put in the old section of the hotel which is more like a "nice" motel with none of the amenities I would expect of a luxury hotel. The staff were superb but I was expecting a lot more for the price.

I enjoyed my stay at Sangay. Very walkable to many in town places plus a couple of thermal areas right there. Their spa area was pleasant and clean! Breakfast was good. Rooms spacious and comfortable. Only knock was the cooler shower. Stayed 2 nights. Showers much warmer in the spa area. Still rated 5 star despite the shower.

Unfortunately, this was our least favorite property during our entire Ecuador trip. The rooms lack proper ventilation and feel very humid. I was honestly surprised there wasn’t visible mold given the level of moisture. The staff tried to be helpful, but we found their demeanour a little weird and prices for services, such as transportation, to be significantly higher than arranging them independently. We checked in on a Sunday, and loud music played throughout the afternoon. There is virtually no soundproofing, and guests using the pool can easily see into the rooms, which offers very little privacy. The noise continued well into the night. Between the music, people talking loudly, and the constant sounds outside, it was difficult to sleep. There didn’t seem to be any quiet hours for guests. We eventually requested a standing fan, which helped mask some of the noise so we could finally get some rest at midnight. It is pleasantly cool so you don’t need a fan but with no ventilation and no mesh window, it becomes a little suffocating. Breakfast is served with a beautiful view of the waterfall behind the property, which is definitely a highlight. However, the food itself was average considering the price of the stay. The Wi-Fi was another disappointment. When we reported that it wasn’t working, we were twice told that it was simply a free public network. It was only after we insisted and demonstrated the issue that the staff acknowledged it wasn’t functioning properly. Overall, interacting with the staff wasn’t a pleasant experience. The one exception was the cleaning lady, who was absolutely wonderful and incredibly kind. In fact, we found it easier to arrange taxis ourselves rather than book them through the hotel, despite the added convenience the hotel could have offered.

The Sangay Hotel is a town hotel in Banos. The staff, service and food were amazing. If you coming to Banos to check out sites and walk through downtown this the perfect spot. Please do not expect modern amenities and furniture. It’s still worth the location and hotel.
