Decent room with good AC and simple but clean bathroom. Good Indonesian style breakfast. Staff very attentive and helpful. Beer available 5 minutes walk.

I spent a night here at Wisma Grace and I can already tell you what a great place this is! I was looking to switch hotels and as I was in the area the previous day, I decided to check the place out. Sonny, a young Indonesian Chinese was at the reception & greeted me with warmth & politeness. He was very kind and allowed me to tour the facility (without disturbing current guests, of course), also helping out with suggestions on eateries that were nearby. Sonny also showed me the collection of books with a wealth of information about visiting Ambon and the many islands. I checked in the next day to another friendly hello by Sonny’s wife, Gabby. Just like her husband, she has such a pleasant personality, and equally helpful with questions & provided connections about touring the nearby islands. She also recommended a nice place for lunch that was within walking distance. I immediately felt very welcomed. I recognise one of the young male staff from the previous day who showed me to my room, who is also very curteous, polite and a little bit shy. The room I stayed in was spacious, inviting and very clean. They have big windows that draw in sunlight and 2 layers of curtains - a sheer & a blackout - which was perfect for me (I preferred the sheer). The windows can also be opened (which I did most of the day) so, I was really happy with that option. I had minimal use of the AC (please keep in mind depending the time of the day, the island can get quite hot so use of the AC might be best, and that the compressor also makes a little hum which is common in Asia) but it isn’t too loud that it disrupts. For light sleepers, it might be wise to travel with ear plugs or else you can buy them cheaply at hardware stores that are nearby. The bathroom is very clean, with shower/hair gel provided, along with a floor mat & a towel (or two, if you are traveling with another person), has hot water and toilet paper. Plumbing can be a bit tricky so a bin is provided for waste that should not be flushed down the loo. A floor squeeqee is provided in the bathroom if water collects after a shower (which it doesn’t, by the way) and if you want to keep the floor dry. Remember to bring your own toothbrush & toothpaste as these are not included. The breakfast options are nice local rice dishes or western style toast. Best to let the reception (Gaby or Sonny) know in advance so they can prepare it for you. The prices are reasonable & the Indonesian food has a yummy home-cooked feel to it :) Gaby’s aunt makes the dishes & if you would like something off menu, it might be worthwhile paying for the ingredients (these are seasonal) as a way to savour the local delicacies which may not be available everywhere. Water, coffee & tea is available for free throughout your stay. If you are staying on the first floor, there is a small kitchen with a sink, sponge & washing detergent, a little fridge to store some of your personal items, a kettle (it takes a little while to boil), coffee, tea & a water dispenser. Behind the reception desk on the ground floor, there is a fridge that sells fruit juice, soft drinks & beer, and at hours when reception is closed (it is open everyday from 0700am to 2100pm), there is an ‘honesty list’ whereby you should write your name & item that you took which can be paid for at the end of your stay. Do spend some time looking around and on the walls - you will find maps of this part of Indonesia, along with Gaby’s personal artwork - in paint, pen & watercolour form. They are beautifully done and certainly depict the wonderful memories with previous guests that have stayed at Wisma Grace. Ambon already feels like a safe place to venture around on your own, even for solo female travellers. The guesthouse is simple but clean and quiet. What makes it exceptional are the hosts Gabby and her husband Sonny. They go way beyond any expectations in terms of helping you out. Super!!
