Coober Pedy Experience Motel

This is overall a “basic” hotel, with simple amenities and some quirks but it is competently managed and i and my family always enjoy the stay here. It feels somehow safe and homey to us! It is one of only a couple of decent places to stay in the town… and I have now stayed in Cooper Pedy dozens of times over many years with a mixture of good and bad experiences. We like the underground experience - but beware sleeping in with no natural light!! The breakfast they provide at the cafe is simple, but very accessible and my kids do just love the continental/all-you-can-eat nature of it even though it is little more than cereal, juice and toast (and you could absolutely do it yourself for cheaper). Staff are great - friendly and helpful. They can be scarce if you need them at odd times. We stayed in room 16 this time (3 singles and a double), and this particular room had a functional but wobbly toilet. Will stay again.

The hotel promotes "history meets luxury". It certainly provides the history, and do make sure you wander around this former mine, there is a surprise around every corner. However, the luxury is sorely lacking, and it could do with an upgrade desperately (and better cleaning). The room was also very hot, not what we were led to expect being underground, and the only "air conditioning" was a fan, which we ran constantly. It was cooler out in the main areas of the hotel (again, we only saw fans, no air-con in sight). However it was close to the main street and attractions, and has free wi-fi, a fridge and microwave, plus a TV is you can get a channel with reception. I would stay here again if the price was right, but hope they put some money into refurbishing both the rooms and hallway carpets, which seem to be as old as the hotel itself.

We arrived late in the afternoon just before sunset, and my two kids who had never stayed underground, where gobsmacked from the moment they walked in to the moment we left the next day. Room was clean an tidy, TV with DVD player which kept them busy. Wifi unfortunately was weak and intermittant, but still usuable to a degree. Shower & Bathroom was fabulous. A fan and natural cooling of inside the earthth is a great idea.

They got Google TV in the room. Two dogs living in the front yard, ppl who bring the pet with you might need to pay attention to it.
