My wife and I recently had the pleasure of staying at Gekko-an in Kyoto, and it was an experience that exceeded all expectations. From the moment we stepped through the doors, we were immersed in the serene atmosphere of this charming ryokan. The amenities provided were nothing short of exceptional. The room was a perfect blend of modern comfort and traditional Japanese aesthetics, featuring tatami mat flooring, shoji screens, and a private onsen that offered a relaxing soak with a view of the beautiful garden. The attention to detail in every aspect of the room showcased the thoughtful design and commitment to providing a truly authentic experience. The staff were the true highlight of our stay. Their warm hospitality and genuine desire to ensure our comfort made us feel like cherished guests. To anyone reading this review: Book this room immediately! Please, do not hesitate. This was one of—if not THE—best hospitality experiences I have ever had, not just in Japan, but anywhere in the world. ​I could write a 5,000-word essay detailing the beauty of this traditional Japanese "Machiya" and the incredible warmth of the staff. The attention to detail in both the design and the service is so impeccable that honestly, they could charge double or triple the price, and I wouldn't complain one bit. It is that good. ​The creative team has done a phenomenal job seamlessly fusing traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern luxury. We stayed in the Garden Suite, which faces the street and is nestled right among local Kyoto homes, secured by an advanced entry system. The suite is a masterpiece: Tatami flooring, a hand-painted lotus mural by a Japanese master artist, and sliding doors featuring traditional Karakami paper. It also features a private, exquisite Japanese courtyard—waking up to a light snowfall in the garden the next morning was absolutely magical! ​The amenities are top-tier: modern washlet, Dyson hair dryer and heater, and a toiletries set from a century-old local Kyoto brand. I must mention the kitchenette—it felt like a true home with a microwave, a full set of exquisite Alfact cutlery for five, various tea and wine glasses, a Nespresso machine, and a kettle. Spending two nights sipping my own freshly whisked Matcha on the Tatami was pure bliss. ​Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by three impeccably dressed staff members, including Shin and Shohei. Shin not only explained the unique history of the neighborhood (the heart of ancient Japan, blessed by the Moon God!), but also walked us through a custom-made local map, pointing out every convenience store and station. He even crafted a "local's itinerary" for us, which was a lifesaver. ​Shin also personally called to secure a reservation for us at a top-tier Yakiniku restaurant that is usually impossible to book. Following his advice the next day, we took the charming "Randen" tram to Kinkaku-ji and Ryoan-ji. Thanks to his route, we avoided the tourist crowds, explored winding local streets, and witnessed the breathtaking beauty of the Ryoan-ji Zen garden in the snow. ​Before we left, Shohei presented us with a lovely parting gift. The service went above and beyond—quite literally. When I accidentally dropped a glove in the room and walked away, Shohei ran hundreds of meters down the street just to return it to me. I cannot express my gratitude enough! ​Although we only stayed for two days, I felt a true sense of belonging, as if I were living like a local in Kyoto. I cannot imagine a better way to experience the culture than in this house that is both historically rich and modernly comfortable. I strongly recommend Gekkoan to everyone. ​To Shin, Shohei, and the team: Please keep doing the amazing work you do!

Gekkoan is an excellent vacation place to experience Kyoto heritage - culture, arts, food, architect. They use exquisite and well curated products that give premium feel. The daily snacks & tea are so good that i look forward for it when we go back from tour. I love that almost everything has historical significance that has 100+ years of experience… even when we departed for osaka, i already miss gekkoan and want to go back. I most appreciate how accommodating, helpful, kind, friendly the staff are. Thank you so much Shin, Shohei, and all staff for taking care of gekkoan and giving us an unforgettable moment! Its heartbreaking to go.. i felt zen in gekkoan. The location is around 8-10 minutes from train station, but it wasnt bothering as its peaceful in the neighborhood. Great way to experience how to live in a residential peaceful environment, than the foreign heavy areas in Kyoto. I cant thank you enough. They even gave us a wonderful gift!! The pictures dont justify the feel when you are actually in Gekkoan.

If I could give additional stars to the staff [Shin, Shohei and Ako] I would! We were greeted by the team and Shin/Shohei gave us an amazing detailed history of the area/gekkoan. Throughout the trip, they were beyond kind - from the welcome snacks, second day snacks and willingness to help any way possible! We booked 2 days with Japanese-style breakfast and truly enjoyed our stay! Recommend for anyone interested to learn more about the local area, attractions and history and looking to relax for a few days!

Do yourself a favour and book! Incredibly knowledgeable staff with attention to detail. Everything was literally thought of during our stay, even coming home to see our phone cables were neatly tied and an amazing snack and drink. The room was lovely but our favourite part was our own personal tub to wind down and relax after a big day of exploring. Honestly the best place to stay.
