The Richardson Hotel

What an amazing building. It is wonderful to see the restoration. Just wish we knew in advance about the onsite tour. Loved our room. Had and nice dinner onsite. Very nice staff

Having grown up in Buffalo, and also relocated several years ago, I’d spent countless drives to Buffalo looking at the HH Richardson complex in awe. As years went by and the building and grounds slipped further into disrepair it seemed impossible it could ever become a hotel. I was very excited to have the chance to stay. For the cost of a cheap suburban chain we were able to book the Richardson, and I’ve never stayed in a hotel like it. When you enter there’s no mistaking that it’s completely different experience, even from other repurposed historic hotels. Everywhere you looks there’s original wood and tile detail. The hallways are grand, and seem to go forever. The room had a 25’ ceiling, with windows that spanned nearly that full distance. The bathrooms, furniture and all amenities are all brand new, making the stunning historic ambiance comfortable and clean too. When we finally walked outside during daylight hours we found beautiful gardens and grounds. The grab and go breakfast was about $15-20, which seemed reasonable compared to the cost charged at business traveler rooms. Also, free parking within the hotel’s campus at such an urban hotel made for another great perk that we wouldn’t have gotten at other properties nearby.

Majestic, lovingly restored building and rooms with incredibly high ceilings and modern design. You can stop anytime into the two-room architecture exhibit by the entrance. Be sure to register in advance if you want to take the popular hard hat tour of the larger Richardson Olmsted campus, though. The incredible AKG Museum and other museums and parks are within walking distance, and there is a public bus stop within 10 minutes' walk. My room was lovely and I greatly enjoyed my stay. I was puzzled that a few things were off in such a nice hotel. The shampoo and body wash refillable containers were completely empty, the pillowcases were too short for the pillows, the coffee cup lids didn't fit the coffee cups, and I wasn't told that breakfast was included until I asked on my second day. The room design also didn't take a measure as simple as putting privacy film over the bottom of the tall bathroom windows. The bathroom view is magnificent, but I had to miss out on the natural light and keep the shade down in order to use the bathroom. Definitely a memorable hotel, especially for architecture enthusiasts!
