Otley Road Headingley is a good location for a hotel if you need to visit the Woodhouse area, near the city-centre, which has lots of student accommodation. Only a 10 minute drive from Ascot Grange to Woodhouse or about 25-30 minutes on a route served by four different buses. For us, the choice of budget hotel was between Ascot Grange and a well-known chain-hotel about 10 minutes’ walk down the road. But mid-September, the start of a new academic year, is probably one of the busiest and therefore priciest times for these hotels. We paid *** per night for a double room plus breakfast on the second floor, with free ground-level on-site parking. It would have cost us *** at the other place, where parking is more limited and requires negotiating steep narrow ramps to reach parking at roof-level. OK, the exterior has a sort of faded splendour, in contrast to the bleak office-block appearance of the place by the Arndale Mall. But, at Ascot Grange, the furniture, fittings, equipment & décor in our room are equally modern & clean. Hot water for the shower runs quickly. The room is a bit small, but adequate. Not at all claustrophobia-indicing: plenty of fresh air available via easy-to-open windows & a reasonably decent view. Apparently, breakfast catering used to be provided by the Voujon Restaurant, but they moved to a new site in early September. The Ascot Grange staff were coping admirably with the transition, offering tea, coffee & the usual cereals, fruit, yogurt, croissants, etc. I guess they will resume offering hot food (bacon & eggs, etc.) again in due course. Best of all were the friendly staff – Olla, Yasmina & the old guy in charge of breakfast.

“Clean & friendly, Less than half the price of the nearest competitor”
