Unfortunately the day / night before reservation Storm Amy arrived and caused havoc with the power and heating ,so was informed on the morning of check in not to travel as hotel was now closed until services could be restored. Will rebook for another date

Lovely welcoming private hotel. Rooms comfortable and clean. Food and bar excellent. Breakfast local produce. Great experience. Will definitely be back.

We have stayed here before and enjoyed it, finding the staff very pleasant. We arrived last Friday in the middle of Storm Amy and were in the annexe when the lights in the room went out. The lights were on in the hallways so we thought it was just our room and went to the main building. Nobody was at reception, but two other guests who had driven from York said there was a power cut and the hall lighting was emergency powered. We went to the bar where there were four members of staff, not serving anyone, but they didn't greet or acknowledge us. One of the ladies went over to ask if there was anything to eat and got the curt reply: "No, there's a power cut, there's no food." She asked if they could have a sandwich and was told: "No, we don't do sandwiches." She asked for a drink and was told she couldn't have one because the till was down. The abruptness and inhospitability was extraordinay. We sat in the bar chatting for a while and saw that the young barman was serving drinks to other customers. My husband went over to order a drink and was told the manager had said no more drinks were to be served. The following morning, we spoke to a very pleasant and apologetic receptionist who said power would not be restored until Monday and we would have to find alternative accommodation. She said on Monday the hotel would be in touch about a refund. This is now Thursday and there has been no message or refund. Obviously the hotel had no control over the power cut, but the surly and unhelpful attitude of the staff was uncalled for. There must surely have been the ingredients for a sandwich, and since the hotel had our credit card details, they could have noted a drinks order and charged for these later.

Excellent rooms, food and staff, particularly behind the bar. Highly recommended
