The Melrose Hotel

Handy location within close walking distance to the station. They really must include a quilt or duvet as an absolute baseline for amenities. My room had neither (was first informed the rooms/beds do not include quilts, and then that they had ‘run out’, and I was instructed to use a fleece throw blanket over the top sheet). Crucially needs to be a standard moving forward. Otherwise, clean accommodations and generally adequate for the price.

Good value for the money Immaculately clean However the area is nit that Safe. Be careful when booking with family.

Not much for amenities but clean and comfortable. The A/C works great and the bed was comfortable enough. Medium firm ( I prefer firm but it was not bad) No fridge, but a cooler drawer. I added ice in Ziplock freezer bags to keep food from spoiling and it worked well enough though required extra effort. The staff were very nice and accommodating. As a native New Yorker, I have lived in much worse neighborhoods but if you're not used to it or don't know how to act, it's bad. Orange needle tops and crack barrels on the ground and zombie addicts and beggars around 24/7. However, I never felt unsafe, and I would return from work between 2 and 3 AM. But I'm big and very streetwise. Daytime your good. The local businesses are very nice and try extra hard to serve you! The hard-working entrepreneurs deserve your patronage! Try Viva Cafe for a great breakfast or lunch including freshly made juices and smoothies. 32oz fresh squeezed OJ for $14! I think I paid $14 for an 6oz glass last time I was in The Hamptons ( I get around! ) The "fancier" Opera Hotel is next door ( same owners ) and a bubble tea place, Dunkin, McD, BK, Taco Bell etc all within a 3-4 min walk. Also a fully stocked grocery store across the street. I think the 2 train stop right near the hotel doesn't always operate late at night. My google maps would always give me a bus option from my job at Fresh Direct. I would just walk the mile up St. Anne's. Though I wouldn't recommend that to non- street people. A large police presence ( precinct near by ) but that doesn't always guarantee your safety. But even for inexperienced out of towners looking for a place to say cheaper than Manhattan or wanting to go to a Yankee game, this is a great choice. Don't hesitate. Just be smart and use Ubers or set up a ride service for late night returns. The local urchins won't swarm on you like a school of piranhas. Just don't give them a reason.
