Ideal place to stay. Central. Good food, and, very obliging staff.

The matress was lumpy and we could feel the springs. Old fashioned decor in the room, dark & dated but the shower was good. Cooked breakfast was very tasty & plenty of it with helpful staff.

My room (1) was good and the bed comfy enough, though I did hear some mumbling from other residents about low beds and ghosts. The en-suite was a little cramped but the shower cubicle was a good size. The whole of the downstairs area was set out as a restaurant, and although they served three good real ales it was not the place to call in for a few pints. The staff were OK but a little lacking in drive. The food was good. So overall I would return so I guess I would recommend to some friends.

We stayed in room 4. While there is no doubt the decor is tired the room was spotless and well equipped with tea, coffee etc. no noise from the pub downstairs. The staff were absolutely lovely, so welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was great with a good range of time available to have it. We stayed there while visiting Durham, took about 20 minutes in the car but there is also a regular bus service. Will definitely go back.
