Booked this hotel initially cause it was closest to a family member living there but was blown away by the architecture and the interior design of the castle. The staff were only able to speak a little bit of english but we were able to get by with translation tools! The room is huge and the sofa bed was surprisingly comfortable. Lots of hangers, kettle was provided and a minibar. You get an amazing view of the town from the suite and the wide array of dvd selections in the room. Wifi was strong and the breakfast spread was amazing. No food wastage as you had to check a list of food items you wish to eat the next day and they serve you from there. Dont forget to go up to the roof top during sunset, one of the best moments I had. Although be prepared as there is no lift so you will need to carry your lugagge up to your room and there are about 3 floors in total.

Sometimes when you dont speak the language, there can be miscommunication and misunderstandings. Agoda and many other hotel sites note that one of the benefits of this hotel is free drinking water. Nowhere do any of these sites state that only the water on the first night is free. Well if drinking water is not free why mention it all as a benefit? Usually when you do not put the sign on the door asking that staff not clean the room, implies to clean the room. But in the case of this hotel you must use the sign please clean the room. These issues can easily be disuaded with a a Dear Guest letter in the room. The hotel and Quedlinburg are quite nice but it can be difficult if you do not speak English. Even in the high season we were the only ones in the town who did not speak English. The hotel notes that English is spoken but except for a few words, this is not the case. We were actually yelled at by a bus driver for not speaking the language. Back to the hotel, here are the pros and cons: Pros — beautiful hotel as a newish castle (late 1800s), very clean, quiet, nice staff, great breakfast and beautiful grounds. You soon forget that this “castle” was completed in 1898. All hotels provide a free bus pass that allows travel throughout the whole Harz mountains area. Cons — Heed the warning, which we knew in advance, that there is no elevator and you must walk up 6 flights of stairs to your room. If you are older or have even minor physical disabilities, this hotel is not for you. Quedlinburg is worth a short stay or a 1 day trip. In retrospect, Wernigerode is a much better centrally located Harz mountain town that is just as beautiful and has so many more restaurants and services. Whereas Quedlinburg is on the edge of the Harz mountains, Wernigerode is right in the center and provides easy access to more of the beautiful towns throughout. The whole Harz mountains are a hidden gem yet to be discovered by non German tourists.
