I do wonder if some hotels reserve their less than ideal rooms for guests who book through one of the on-line booking sites - the room I had bore no resemblance to any of the rooms featured in the photos. Initial impressions were good - very friendly and helpful staff on arrival and in the dining room. My evening meal was nice - steak and chips - and the waiting staff very polite and attentive. The room appeared to be superficially clean but there were stains on the carpet and down the walls - looked like they had a roof leak at some point - and only one of the three ceiling lights worked. The bed was rock hard and caused me a lot of pain during the night and throughout the following day. Although a good size, the bathroom was really not up to standard, for example the bin lid was broken off, there were bits of rubbish left on the floor (cotton buds, etc) and the lighting was appalling - no lights on the bathroom mirror and just very dim overhead light. The shower was a fixed head rainfall/waterfall shower (the nemesis of most women) and impossible to have a proper shower if you don't want to get your hair wet. Plus there were no hot/cold markings on the dial which, given that you need to be standing in the shower to turn it on, was less than helpful! When it came to breakfast the experience was just odd. I arrived in the dining room - no one was there, despite it being at least 20 minutes after the breakfast service started, so I took a seat. A couple of members of staff walked past me but I was ignored. I began to wonder if I was in the right place. Then I saw another person (presumably a guest) appear from a room behind me with a plate of food. So, I went to investigate. There were no signs to indicate it was a self service breakfast (it would not have taken much effort to put a friendly notice on the tables to explain this!). My room was facing the main road in the original building, with access from a corner of the bar seating area. Access upstairs was awkward because you have hold the door open, leaving you stand on the stairs to with your luggage, particularly awkward when leaving. The room was very cold and I couldn't see how to turn the heating on. I would have expected the heating to be on low in the bathroom at least. I know the staff would have helped if I'd had time to ask when they were on duty. The staff were very friendly and accommodating in the bar and at breakfast, but there's was only one coffee (pod) machine that got busy. I would stay there again, but I'd ask the heating to be set low before arrival in colder seasons.

We had a tasteful well equipped quiet room, the staff were polite & attentive and we had a most enjoyable breakfast. We would stay here again.

Lovely pub/ hotel Great food Fantastic room, a little on the warm side - but at least I had afan and it felt so safe I could leave the windows and door open!

Everything was great except my room was on the main road and the traffic woke me up. In future I would ask for a room at the back. Great staff.
