Hotel-Restaurant Schmachtenbergshof

We had a good 2 night stay here. The staff was always pleasant and helpful. The rooms were a good size, although they didn't have a mini fridge or a kettle. The bathroom was modern. The ambience was lovely as well. Sufficient breakfast was on offer. The big drawback for us was the extremely thin room walls though. We could hear our neighbour listening to his TV all night, people coughing their lungs out in the next room, and a phone ringing so loud in yet another room that we thought every time it was our own phone. I would say if they could sound proof their rooms, it would made for a very lovely B&B. The restaurant attached to the hotel is also excellent. We would probably return again as the location personally works well for us, and the people who work there are pleasant. However do not expect to be right in the middle of Essen or even Kettwig. Having a car is probably a must to get around more easily.
