엘 모우라디 팔라세

This is one of several resort style hotels to the north of El Kantaoui marina. Allocated 5 stars, but by international standards it is not, lacking some of the luxury items and with only acceptable food. However when combined with a selected Easyjet flight it is exceptional value and plenty good enough for me. Situated on a large site with the main building set back from the road traffic noise is reduced. It is a U shape surrounding a large terrace and pool area with rooms on 4 floors. Mine was on the second floor but on the entrance side of the building. Only half of the rooms overlook the pool area. The room was large and clean with a very good bathroom, wall safe small TV (local and french stations) euro sockets wifi and empty fridge. There is a small balcony with a table and chairs but not used because of traffic noise. On the ground floor apart from reception there are the restaurant a number of lounge areas with bars in 2 of them, large screen TVs tuned to a football channel a spa gym and indoor pool. The whole place inside and out is spotless. My room was cleaned every day the towels and sheets replaced a couple of times but not every day. Around the pool area lots of sunbeds and canopied seating areas leading to extensive gardens and outdoor sports facilities. Closer to the beach there is a currently an unmanned bar, stacks of sunbeds and paddle boards ready for the hotter days to come. The beach (completely deserted) has a narrow strip of soft golden sand leading to the shoreline but separated by a continuous strip of plastic debris filled seaweed. If you venture into the garden area there are some rundown facilities. An evil looking pool, another empty and in the process of being renovated. At this time year there is a very low occupancy rate, mainly elderly european couples with some younger locals and from time to time parties of SE asians. As a result there is a good ratio of staff to guests. A very relaxing atmosphere all round, the waiters friendly and helpful. No sooner are table vacated than they are cleared and re-laid. No mad scramble for tables or food. There is plenty of options in hot and cold dishes but few choices. For example not a banana grape or pineapple in site, only oranges and apples. Some of the hot dishes have a strange flavour. Avoid the soups. Now a list of the downsides. I had prebooked a quiet room with a single large bed but was allocated a noisier one with twin beds. Too firm for me to sleep well. The booking stated all taxes were paid but had to pay 84 dinar in taxes at registration. No robes or slippers provided and the towels where not thick or had the 5 star feel to them. There was a 40 dinar charge to use the gym. Sometimes drinks were free other times charged. Minor irritations such as the lack of spoons or glasses at times is an annoyance. Would I recommend this hotel? Yes I would but with reservations. Don't expect too much and note this may not be lively enough for some at this time of year.
